punkOrigin story: (see canon) The nitty gritty details of Verity's illustrious background are relatively unknown and she likes to keep it that way. A smart, but unfocused kid, she spent her youth skipping from foster family to foster family and spends more time on the run then she does settled. There is no tragic back story for Verity - many of her foster homes were perfectly good families that she ran away from more for a sense of freedom than unhappiness. Like kids sometimes do, Verity fell in and out of some bad crowds, but managed to not get into too much actual trouble. She may do some pick- pocketing and light conning to get by, but Verity's got more interest in staying below the radar than in getting noticed by the cops. Verity is old enough to be on her own now and is largely a drifter with an unremarkable life of petty crime and grifting.
As in the comic, she spends a lot of time hitch hiking and soul searching or whatever young adult bullshit. Mostly avoiding being a real, productive member of society, let's be real.
Verity comes to L.A. on a stolen motorcycle, on her way to Santa Monica (a city infamously friendly to drifters, natch). Just like any other city, she considers her stay in the City of Angels to be a very temporary endeavour.
Personality:
Verity is brash, self reliant and has a serious chip on her shoulder - not that different from what you might expect of someone who's spent most of her life running away from foster homes and any more permanent life style. She's like the grizzled main character of every action movie but with less stubble and cans and cans of mace. Verity is well-travelled and schooled in taking care of herself, picking up much of what she knows through experience and the people she meets. She's extremely distrustful, both as a defensive behaviour (she is after all a young girl who travels alone frequently) but even with those who she begins to become friends with she stays at arms length. She doesn't want to allow herself too close a connection to people for fear of being hurt either directly by them, or by potentially losing them for one reason or other. To this end she tries to maintain a cool, detached exterior, but isn't actually very successful at it, and most people see through her bravado easily.
She is more mistrusting of authority figures than anyone else, and most likely to have some semblance of trust with those in similar positions to herself -younger people or people who live outside the normal confines of suburban life. The friends she does make tend to be via the internet (Verity makes sure to keep a computer with her at all times as her one stable tie to the static world (a fact that gets her in trouble in canon when she steals a Decepticon palm pilot). Through networking with other drifters and grifters, Verity maintains, if not "friendships" a network of relationships with people who can offer each other resources and information. The safety and anonymity of the internet allows Verity one small outlet where she feels she can get to know people without consequence.
Although she's spent little extended time in school, Verity is known for being clever and curious, and while she has little regard for public educational establishments is a quick and eager learner. She has a great desire to pick up skills that are useful (many of dubious legality) but also skills for their own sake...she's gradually become more of a jack of all trades than anything else, picking up bits and pieces of knowledge where she can. And while she's not interested in getting CLOSE to people, but she is interested in people, and spends a lot of time on her travels interacting with, watching and learning about the people she meets and comes across. She's learning about the world in own, unconventional (for an American teenager) way.
Despite her short-comings, poor socialization, and penchant for petty crime Verity is generally a decent person. She tries to be helpful when she can, and to not harm people (in her eyes) with her crimes, which she feels she does for necessity only. To those few people that she does become friends with, she is steadfastly loyal, and willing to stupid and dangerous things to protect them if need be. She's not likely to shy away from new and interesting situations, although she's also a survivor at her core, and knows when to run and when to fight.
Verity is on her way to Santa Monica for no particular reason other than the good weather and because it's a destination on her map, and so as she passes through LA will have no qualms about extending her stay once she encounters something interesting. Verity is mostly after an interesting experience in life, and the Los Angeles of Capital H has no shortage of "interesting"....all it would take is a look at a local newspaper to see that events there are far from sedate or ordinary.
Differences from canon: Verity's age varies in canon but in this she is STARTING at a higher age, around 20. Little is changed except in her backstory but the canon involving Cybertronians has been wiped - Verity has not met any Transformers and so any backstory that goes along with that is no longer present.
